Notes |
Another paper arguing for the need for an objective measurement of presence. Similar to others of the same period, presence is discussed in terms of robotic tools (hence telepresence) and there is no suggestion that presence might be tied to other forms of VE such as computer games (the first 3D, first-person perspective games released in 1991 – Hovertank 3D and Catacomb 3D).

For telepresence, the most important factor is the degree of correlation between actions of the remote robot displayed back to the operator and the operator's movements triggering those actions. Correlation is lessened (and telepresence correspondingly) with time delays, internal noise, and distortions between movements/intentions of operator and actions of robot.
